Dink, Dink, Hooray! The Ultimate Guide to Pickleball Lingo
Dink, Dink, Hooray! The Ultimate Guide to Pickleball Lingo
Whether you're brand new to the court or a seasoned player who's been dinking since before it was cool, pickleball has a language all its own. And honestly? It's one of the best parts of the sport. Where else can you say "I got caught in the kitchen" and have it mean something totally different from cooking dinner?
At MARSH Styles, we live and breathe pickleball culture, and that means knowing the lingo. So grab your paddle, step off the baseline, and let's break it all down.
🥒 The Kitchen (Non-Volley Zone)
The kitchen is the 7-foot zone on either side of the net where you can't volley the ball (hit it out of the air). It sounds simple, but mastering the kitchen, knowing when to enter, when to stay back, and when to dink, is what separates beginners from pros. As our tee says: "The Kitchen: Serving Fresh Dinks 24/7."
🏓 The Dink
A dink is a soft, controlled shot that arcs over the net and lands in the opponent's kitchen. It's the chess move of pickleball, patient, strategic, and absolutely infuriating to play against when done right. Dink masters are the real MVPs of the court.
⚡ The Erne
Named after Erne Perry, the erne is an advanced shot where a player moves outside the court to hit a volley near the net post. It's flashy, it's fast, and it makes everyone watching go "wait, is that legal?" (It is.)
🎯 The Third Shot Drop
The third shot drop is a soft shot hit by the serving team on the third shot of a rally, designed to land in the kitchen and neutralize the net advantage. It's one of the most important shots in pickleball and one of the hardest to master. If you've got it down, you deserve a trophy, or at least a cool hoodie.
🔥 Banging / Banger
A banger is a player who loves to hit the ball hard, forget the dinking, they're going full power every time. It's a valid strategy, and it drives dink-lovers absolutely crazy. No judgment here... okay, maybe a little.
🌀 The Spin Serve
Spin serves add topspin or sidespin to the ball to make it bounce unpredictably. The rules around spin serves have evolved over the years, so always check the latest rulebook before busting one out in a tournament.
🏅 ATP (Around the Post)
An ATP is when you hit the ball around the outside of the net post instead of over it. It's one of the most spectacular shots in pickleball and an instant crowd-pleaser. If you pull one off, you've earned the right to celebrate loudly.
📣 Stacking
Stacking is a doubles strategy where both players position themselves on the same side of the court after the serve or return, then shift to their preferred sides. It sounds complicated, but once you get it, it's a game-changer.
💬 "Pickle!"
Before you serve, you're supposed to call out "Pickle!" (or the score) to signal you're about to serve. It's a quirky little tradition that perfectly captures the fun, laid-back spirit of the game.
